Having “The Talk”

Speaking to an elderly friend or relative about assisted living is never an easy conversation to have, and in some circumstances it can be difficult for somebody to understand if they suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s. It is important to broach the subject with tact and compassion, as the assumption is that assisted living means a person is being robbed of their independence.

Why not consider visiting us here at Sage Grove, where we will be more than happy to show you around our comfortable assisted living facility? Join us for a meal and show your relative just how much their life could benefit whilst they are staying with us?

At Sage Grove, we want all of our residents to feel happy and comfortable whilst maintaining their independence, so here are some points to remember when the subject arises:

•  Research – Make sure you have thoroughly researched all of the options available. Your friend or relative will no doubt have a lot of questions, so it is important that you have all of the answers to hand. Consider this list of questions when choosing an assisted living facility.

• Let everybody speak – The decision is not just yours to make, so be mindful that this is a big step from an elderly friend or relative. They will have an opinion of their own, so it is important that they are allowed to voice it.

•  Listen–  You must listen to what they are saying, otherwise frustration and anxiety will make the process much more difficult. Don’t dismiss their points – write them down to discuss with us when we meet and tour the facility.

•  Go in with a positive attitude –  People respond to your tone and body language, so present your ideas as positive ones that are in the best interest of your elderly friend or relative.

•  Know when to step away –  If things become tense then it may be best to step away and revisit the conversation at a later date. It may take an elderly friend or relative some time to get used to the thought of moving away from home and into an assisted living center, but having time to think about it will help. Make sure you leave them plenty of information will reassure them when they’re ready to revisit the conversation.

•  Short term stay –  Offer to take them to the facility to show them around. We are always happy to welcome visitors and potential residents, so consider joining us for a meal or try staying for a few days to get a feel for what life at Sage Grove is like.
