Amy’s Message

Since an early age, my parents instilled a work ethic that couldn’t be beat. I was not allowed to “play” until all my chores were done, and “play” usually consisted of working on the family’s dairy farm, with an occasional swim in the Roscoe ditch or fishing at the railroad tracks. At twelve, I was riding my bike to my great-grandmother’s house on Saturdays to clean house, help her shower, do laundry, and make fruitcake around Christmas. I babysat my siblings when my parents were at work, then waited tables at the local truck stop. After raising a family, working in road construction, and becoming a volunteer EMT I found myself at a crossroads. With my children all in school and my husband refusing to let me paint another wall in the house, I decided I needed to care for someone else in my day. When I was hired as a caregiver at an assisted living center and later became a house manager, it became apparent I had finally found my calling in life. The next step was to become an administrator and eventually own my own facility. “Why?” you might ask. Because I love the elderly! I enjoy their stories of times long ago, their wisdom, advice, and especially their humor. Sometimes my residents say the darndest things! I love what I do: making a difference in someone’s end of life years. I enjoy taking them for outings, making sure they are comfortable and well cared for, and I gain new family members. This includes not only the residents, but their families as well–who have all made my life complete.
